Pedro Juan Gutiérrez (Matanzas, Cuba, 1950) exerceu os mais diversos ofícios desde os onze anos: vendedor de sorvetes e de jornais, instrutor de caiaque, cortador de cana-de-açúcar e operário agrícola, soldado, locutor de rádio e jornalista, entre muitos outros que prefere esquecer. Sua obra narrativa foi publicada em 20 países, com um sucesso crescente de crítica e de público. É considerado por renomados críticos dos Estados Unidos, Grã-Bretanha e Alemanha como um “escritor cult”, um mito em expansão. O denominado Ciclo do Centro de Havana é um conjunto de cinco volumes de romances e relatos, e composto por Trilogia suja da Havana (1998), O rei de Havana (1999), Animal tropical (2000), O insaciável homem aranha (2002) e Carne de cachorro (2003). Com o romance Fabián e o caos começa uma nova fase criativa. Também é autor de vários livros de poesia. Atualmente se dedica apenas à literatura e à pintura. Mora em Havana.
