ISAAC BASHEVIS SINGER

Isaac Bashevis Singer nasceu em Radzymin, Polônia, em 1904, filho e neto de rabinos hassídicos. Sem vocação religiosa, seu primeiro emprego foi numa revista literária de Varsóvia, que editou seu primeiro romance em 1932. Três anos depois foi para Nova York, onde passou a trabalhar num jornal iídiche. Seguiu-se uma sucessão de contos e romances que lhe deram fama internacional. Mesmo após conseguir a cidadania americana, continuou a escrever em iídiche, colaborando com os tradutores que vertiam suas obras para o inglês. Seus livros foram adaptados para o teatro e o cinema. Em 1978, ganhou o Prêmio Nobel de literatura. Morreu em Miami, em 1991.
