Nathaniel Hawthorne nasceu em Salém, Massachusetts, em1804. Depois de se formar no Bowdoin College, no Maine, voltou à sua cidade natal, onde escreveu grande parte de suas histórias magistrais sobre o período colonial americano, muitas das quais foram reunidas na coletânea Twice-told tales (1837). De 1839 a 1840, trabalhou na alfândega de Boston, e em 1841 passou vários meses na comunidade experimental de Brook Farm. Após o casamento com Sophia Peabody, mudou-se para o presbitério conhecido como Old Manse, em Concord; lá, entre 1842 e 1845, escreveu a maioria das histórias de Mosses from an old manse (1846). Sua carreira como romancista começou com A letra escarlate (1850), cuja célebre introdução, “A alfândega”, relembra o período em que serviu nessa repartição em Salém. Num curto espaço de tempo, seguiram-se A casa das sete torres (1851) e The Blithedale romance (1852). Após exercer seu terceiro cargo político — como o cônsul norte-americano em Liverpool, Inglaterra, de 1853 a 1857 —, a vida de Hawthorne foi marcada pela publicação de O fauno de mármore (1860), mas também por uma triste incapacidade de concluir diversos romances mais longos. Aparentemente, problemas de saúde e uma crise em sua fé na literatura minaram o talento de Hawthorne para dar um sentido criativo à peculiar experiência moral da América. Morreu em 1864.
