Colm Tóibín nasceu em Enniscorthy, Irlanda, em 1955. Desde 1990, publica romances regularmente, dentre os quais se destacam A luz do farol (2004), O mestre (2005), Mães e filhos (2008) e O testamento de Maria (2013), interpretado por Meryl Streep na versão audiolivro. Paralelamente ao trabalho de ficcionista, publicou estudos variados como jornalista e crítico literário que vão do catolicismo na Europa à temática homossexual na cultura.
