Amitav Ghosh nasceu em Calcutá, em 1956, e passou a infância em Bangladesh, no Sri Lanka e no norte da Índia. Estudou em Nova Delhi, em Oxford e no Egito, e lecionou em várias universidades indianas e americanas. Autor de um livro de viagem e de três romances aclamados e traduzidos em vários países, entre eles O Cromossoma Calcutá, Ghosh também já escreveu para as revistas Granta e The New Yorker, e para os jornais The New York Times e The Observer. Ele mora em Nova York com a mulher e dois filhos.
