Robert Musil nasceu em 1880, a Klagenfurt. Fez seus estudos secundários no colégio militar de Mährisch-Weisskirchen (Hranice, hoje, na República Checa), onde ele ambienterá O Jovem Törless (1906). Após a guerra trabalhou para o Ministério das Relações Exteriores austríaco. A partir de 1923 dedicou-se exclusivamente à literatura, trabalhando como crítico teatral, romancista e ensaísta. Em 1931, se transfere para Berlim, mas em 1933, com o advento do nazismo, retorna a Viena. Em 1938, após a anexação da Áustria, emigrou para a Suíça. Musil morre em Genebra em 1942. Em 1943 é publicada a última parte da sua obra-prima inacabada O Homem Sem Qualidades.
