Sjón nasceu em Reikjavik, Islândia, em 1962. Em 1978, lançou seu primeiro livro de poesias, Sýnir (Visions, na versão em inglês). Foi ativo na cena musical islandesa durante toda a década de oitenta, tendo feito diversas parcerias com a cantora Björk. Com o pseudônimo Johnny Triumph, colaborou como guitarrista convidado da banda The Sugarcubes. Em 2001, foi indicado ao Oscar pelas músicas que compôs para a trilha sonora do filme Dançando no escuro (2000), de Lars von Trier. É autor de diversos livros, entre romances, poemas e teatro, publicados em mais de trinta idiomas. Estreou no Brasil em 2014, com A raposa sombria. Em Pela boca da baleia, romance ambientado no século 16, Sjón mistura a pesquisa sobre passagens históricas com interpretações fantásticas da época sobre o mundo para construir uma narrativa complexa e multifacetada.
