O dramaturgo inglês Tom Stoppard (1937, Zlín, República Tcheca) consagrou de tal forma seu estilo que se tornou adjetivo: stoppardian é o termo usado para classificar autores e peças que utilizam a via do humor para dialogar com conceitos filosóficos. Em 1966 estreou nos teatros com Rosencrantz e Guildenstern estão mortos, em que a saga de Hamlet é recontada a partir da perspectiva de personagens secundários na trama original. Autor de mais de vinte peças e roteiros de cinema, é famoso pela criação de diálogos cheios de ironia e sarcasmo, potencializados pelo uso de duplos sentidos, trocadilhos e múltiplos pontos de vista.
