Filha de imigrantes indianos, Jhumpa Lahiri (Londres, 1967) foi criada em Rhode Island, nos Estados Unidos, e recentemente fixou-se na Itália com a família. Desde a sua festejada estreia em livro, com a coletânea Intérprete de males (2001), que lhe valeu o prêmio Pulitzer, a condição de estrangeira é uma questão central em seus romances e contos. Seu primeiro romance, O xará (2004), ganhou as telas do cinema como Nome de família (2007), sob direção de Mira Nair, cineasta indiana radicada nos Estados Unidos. Seu poder em narrar a vida de imigrantes que não se identificam nem com a cultura de origem nem com a cultura de adoção concilia uma perspectiva ampla, que cobre mais de uma geração, a uma atenção a detalhes miúdos do cotidiano.
