Sinopse

ow more than 175 years after photography’s invention,it is rare to discover a significant chapter of its history thatis essentially unknown to European and North Americanaudiences. São Paulo’s Foto Cine Clube Bandeirante(FCCB) is widely heralded in Brazil, but almost invisibleto photography enthusiasts elsewhere. Historically theirachievements were well known to the internationalcircuit of salons in which they participated, including OttoSteinert and his fellow “Subjective” photographers inGermany and the Société Française de la Photographiein Paris. Nonetheless, to date not a single Americaninstitution owns vintage photographs by anyone other thanGeraldo de Barros.Published to accompany an exhibition at TheMuseum of Modern Art, this publication assembles arobust selection of photographs to introduce the FCCB’sground-breaking photographic experiments to a wideraudience. Six thematic chapters highlight individualachievements as well as the breadth of the club’smembership, transforming the history of photography aswe know it and connecting with contemporary Brazilianpainting and São Paulo’s then-newly-formed museumsof modern art. This is the first non-Portuguese languagepublication to grapple with these photographs.
