Malala Yousafzai iniciou sua campanha pelo direito das meninas à educação aos dez anos. Usando o pseudônimo Gul Makai, escreveu um blog para a BBC urdu contando como era a vida sob o domínio do Talibã. Em 2011, em reconhecimento de sua coragem, Malala foi indicada ao Prêmio Internacional da Paz das Crianças e recebeu o primeiro Prêmio Nacional da Paz do Paquistão. Em outubro de 2012, sofreu um ataque do Talibã enquanto voltava da escola, mas sobreviveu e seguiu com sua luta. Foi agraciada com inúmeros outros prêmios, entre eles o Nobel da paz, recebido em 2014.
