Stieg Larsson nasceu em Skelleftehamn, na Suécia, em 1954. Foi um dos mais influentes jornalistas e ativistas políticos de seu país e trabalhou na destacada agência de notícias TT. À frente da revista Expo, fundada por ele, denunciou organizações neofacistas e racistas. É co-autor de Extremhögern, livro sobre a extrema direita em seu país. Por causa de sua atuação na luta pelos direitos humanos, recebeu várias ameaças de morte. Em 2004, aos cinqüenta anos, pouco após entregar aos seus editores a trilogia Millennium, morreu, vítima de um ataque cardíaco.
