Nascida em 1970, Han Kang, é autora de obras que retratam com grande representatividade a questão da feminilidade, tema caro a essa nova geração, têm sido também reconhecidas por escrutinizar a “tristeza e solidão fundamental do ser humano”, segundo os seus críticos. Estudou Literatura Coreana na Universidade Yonsei e estreou nas letras como poeta em 1993, ano em que se formou, com a publicação de um poema no periódico literário Literatura e Sociedade. Em 1994, o seu conto A Vela Vermelha foi premiado no Concurso Literário do Diário Seul. Foi apontada como “uma das porta-estandartes da nova geração da literatura coreana, atualmente, leciona no Departamento de Criação Artística da Universidade Seul de Artes. Recebeu o Prêmio Yi Sang — o prêmio literário coreano de maior prestígio — em 2005, aos 35 anos, com o conto “A Mancha Mongólica”, Além do Prêmio Coreano de Literatura em Prosa (1999) e o Prêmio Yi Sang (2005), recebeu o Prêmio Escritor de Excelência do Diário Hanguk (1995), e o Prêmio de Jovem Artista de Hoje do Ministério da Cultura e Turismo (2000). Han Kang é autora de uma produção febril — em vinte anos de atividade, já publicou sete romances, quatro volumes de novelas/contos, quatro livros infantis e duas coletâneas de ensaios livres.
