Katie Kitamura nasceu em 1979, na Califórnia. Jornalista, crítica e escritora, colabora com publicações como The Guardian, The New York Times e Wired com artigos sobre arte, cinema e luta. É autora de Japanese for Travellers (2006), The Longshot (2009), Gone to the Forest (2012) e Intimacies (2021). Seu romance Uma separação foi publicado no Brasil pela Companhia das Letras em 2021 e, em 2026, o romance Audição, finalista do Booker Prize e do National Book Critics Circle Award de Ficção, foi publicado pela editora Fósforo.
