Tony Judt estudou no King’s College, Cambridge, e na École Normale Superieure, Paris, e lecionou em Cambridge, Oxford e Berkeley. Foi fundador e diretor do Remarque Institute, dedicado a criar uma conversa permanente entre Europa e Estados Unidos. Autor e organizador de 14 livros, o professor Judt foi colaborador frequente de The New York Review of Books, Times Literary Supplement, The New Republic, The New York Times e outros periódicos na Europa e nos Estados Unidos. É autor de O chalé da memória, O mal ronda a terra, Reflexões sobre um século esquecido e Pós-guerra: uma história da Europa desde 1945, que foi eleito um dos dez melhores livros de 2005 pela New York Times Book Review, ganhador do Arthur Ross Book Award do Council on Foreign Relations e finalista do prêmio Pulitzer. Tony Judt morreu em agosto de 2010, aos 62 anos.
