David Nicholls nasceu em 1966, em Hampshire, Inglaterra. Formado em literatura e teatro inglês, optou pela carreira de ator e recebeu uma bolsa da American Musical and Dramatic Academy de Nova York. De volta a Londres, atuou em espetáculos teatrais no Battersea Arts Centre, The Finborough, West Yorkshire Playhouse e Birmingham Repertory Theatre. Entre uma peça e outra, em Londres, Nicholls trabalhava como vendedor da rede de livrarias Waterstone's, em Notting Hill. Após trabalhos freelance, conseguiu emprego como leitor de peças e pesquisador da BBC Radio Drama, o que o levou à edição de roteiros na London Week Television e na Tiger Aspect Productions. Nessa época, começou a escrever e adaptou a peça de Sam Shepard, Simpatico, que se tornou um filme estrelado por Sharon Stone e Nick Nolte, em 1999. Ao longo de sua notável carreira de roteirista, recebeu duas indicações ao BAFTA. Além de Um Dia, publicou os romances Resposta Certa e O Substituto.
