ITALO CALVINO

Italo Calvino nasceu em Santiago de Las Vegas, Cuba, em 1923, tendo ido logo a seguir para a Itália. Participou da resistência ao fascismo durante a guerra e foi membro do Partido Comunista até 1956. Em 1946 instalou-se em Turim, onde doutorou-se com uma tese sobre Joseph Conrad. Publicou sua primeira obra, Il sentiero dei nidi di ragno, em 1947. Com O visconde partido ao meio, lançado em 1952, o autor abandonou o neo-realismo dos primeiros livros e começou a explorar a fábula e o fantástico, elementos que marcariam profundamente a sua obra. Nos anos 60 e 70 aprofundou suas experiências formais em livros como As cidades invisíveis e Se um viajante numa noite de inverno. Considerado um dos maiores escritores europeus deste século, morreu em 1985.
