Depois que sua seleção de contos Stick out your tongue (1987), um retrato realista e assombroso do Tibete, foi banida em seu país, o escritor, fotógrafo e poeta Ma Jian (1953, Qingdao, China) mudou-se e há dez anos vive na Inglaterra, em exílio voluntário. Suas andanças pelo interior da China deram origem à narrativa de viagem Red dust (1980). No irônico The noodle maker (2004), explicitou as contradições resultantes da liberdade de mercado e da opressão política em seu país. Seu último romance, Pequim em coma (2008), é escrito em primeira pessoa por uma vítima fictícia do massacre da Praça Tiananmen, a Praça da Paz Celestial.
