Henning Mankell nasceu em Estocolmo e morreu em Gotemburgo, em 2015, aos 67 anos. Considerado um dos maiores autores policiais de todos os tempos, publicou quarenta livros, traduzidos para quarenta idiomas, entre eles A quinta mulher, O homem de Beijing, O guerreiro solitário, O homem que sorria, Os cães de Riga, A leoa branca e Assassinos sem rosto. Atuou também como diretor de teatro e dramaturgo e dividiu grande parte de sua vida entre a Suécia e Moçambique, onde fundou o Teatro Avenida, em Maputo.
