Marcel Proust nasceu em Auteuil, subúrbio de Paris, em 1871. Fundou em 1892 a revista Le Banquet, onde aparecem seus primeiros textos, e passou a colaborar com La Revue Blanche. Nesta época, frequentou os salões aristocráticos parisienses, cujos personagens e costumes forneceram o material para sua obra literária. Com a morte da mãe, em 1905, herdou uma fortuna razoável que lhe permitiu se isolar completamente da vida social (a ponto de trabalhar num quarto revestido de cortiça, para isolamento acústico) e se dedicar inteiramente à criação de Em busca do tempo perdido. Depois de um famoso episódio em que sua obra foi rejeitada pela editora Gallimard por um parecer negativo de André Gide, ela foi publicada em volumes, entre 1913 e 1927: No caminho de Swann, À sombra das raparigas em flor, O caminho de Guermantes, Sodoma e Gomorra, A prisioneira, A fugitiva e O tempo redescoberto – uma das maiores obras da literatura universal. Considerado um dos escritores mais importantes do século XX, Proust morreu em 1922, em Paris.
