After Mr Earnshaw's death, Heathcliff is bullied and humiliated by Catherine's brother Hindley and, wrongly believing that his love for Catherine is not reciprocated, he leaves Wuthering heights. When he returns years later as a wealthy man, he proceeds to exact a terrible revenge for his former miseries. Agnes Grey, Ann Brontë's deeply personal novel, is a trenchant expose of the frequently isolated, intellectually stagnant and emotionally starved conditions under which many governesses worked in the mid-nineteenth century. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall shows Ann Brontë's bold, naturalistic and passionate style. It is a powerful and sometimes violent novel of expectation, love, oppression, sin and betrayal. It portrays the disintegration of the marriage of Helen Huntingdon, the mysterious 'tenant' of the title, and her dissolute, alcoholic husband.

Emily Jane Brontë nasceu em Thornton, no dia 30 de julho de 1818 e faleceu em Haworth, vítima de tuberculose, em 19 de dezembro de 1848 com apenas 30 anos. Deixou um único romance, O Morro dos Ventos Uivantes, considerado um dos grandes clássicos da literatura mundial. Era a irmã mais velha das irmãs Carlotte, Emily e Anne Brontë que, ao lado do irmão Branwell, cresceram no remoto vilarejo rural de Haworth, em Yorkshire. O ambiente, segundo Charlote escreveu mais tarde ao recordar a infância, tinha poucos atrativos para as crianças: "Dependíamos totalmente de nós mesmos e uns dos outros, dos livros e do estudo para encontrar diversões e ocupações na vida. O estímulo mais elevado, bem como o prazer mais vivo, que conhecemos da infância em diante residia em nossos primeiros esforços na composição literária." Em 1847, quando O Morro dos Ventos Uivantes foi publicado, ainda vigorava a convenção segundo a qual os romances deviam servir para a formação e edificação moral dos leitores. Assim, a obra de Emily Brontë (que publicou sob o pseudônimo de Ellis Bell) foi recebida com certa desconfiança, pois ainda que muitos percebessem a força que emanava dessas páginas, a história parecia desenrolar-se em um incômodo universo desprovido de princípios morais, em que a linha entre o bem e o mal é difusa e as motivações dos personagens parecem, a um só tempo, compreensíveis e atrozes.
