Country girls (1960), livro de estreia de Edna O’Brien (1930, Tuamgraney, Irlanda), foi banido de seu país pela naturalidade com que descreve a vida sexual das personagens. Ao mudar-se para Londres, retratou a repressora cidade natal em A pagan place, de 1970. Em mais de vinte romances, os dilemas amorosos de Country girls abriram espaço para os conflitos políticos e sociais da Irlanda, caso de Dezembros selvagens (1999), livro com o qual Edna O’Brien foi comparada a Faulkner pelo escritor Philip Roth. Ela também escreveu diversas coletâneas de contos, muitos deles publicados na New Yorker, peças teatrais – uma delas sobre Virginia Woolf –, além de uma biografia de James Joyce. O romance A luz da noite (2006) será publicado no Brasil neste ano.
