Cixin Liu nasceu em 1963 na província de Shanxi, China, e é o mais prolífico autor de ficção científica do país. Durante a Revolução Cultural Chinesa, foi enviado para a casa de familiares na província de Henan. Formado em engenharia pela Universidade do Norte da China, foi engenheiro em uma usina elétrica antes de se tornar escritor. Venceu oito vezes o mais importante prêmio chinês de ficção científica, além de ter sido o primeiro autor não anglófono a vencer o prêmio Hugo de melhor romance.
