Xinran nasceu em Pequim, em 1958. Trabalhou em Nanquim até 1997, quando a impossibilidade de publicar na China o seu relato fez com que se mudasse para Londres com seu filho. Casada com um inglês, leciona atualmente na School of Oriental and African Studies da Universidade de Londres.
