O escritor russo Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoi (1828-1910) — também conhecido como Leon, Leão ou Liev Tolstoi — destacou-se no panteão dos grandes mestres russos da literatura do século XIX, ao lado de nomes como Dostoiévski, Turguêniev e Tchekhov. Não bastasse a honra de ser um dos proeminentes de um círculo tão grandioso de escritores, Tolstói foi um ativista ferrenho do pacifismo, propagandeando durante toda a sua velhice os benefícios de uma vida simples e próxima da natureza.
