MARTIN LUTHER KING nasceu em 15 de janeiro de 1929, em Atlanta, na Geórgia, e morreu assassinado em 4 de abril de 1968, em Memphis, no Tennessee. Tornou-se doutor em teologia pela Universidade de Boston, em 1955, mas foi como pastor de uma igreja batista de Montgomery, no Alabama, que iniciou a sua história como líder do movimento por direitos civis no Sul dos EUA. Pregando a não-violência como forma de protesto à discriminação racial, às injustiças econômicas e à guerra, Luther King recebeu o prêmio Nobel da Paz em 1964.
