Roberto Saviano nasceu em Nápoles, Itália, em 1979. Em 2006, ao publicar Gomorra (Bertrand/Record, 2009), livro-reportagem em que destrincha o funcionamento da máfia italiana, passou a viver escoltado por policiais e mudando constantemente de endereço, em função de ameaças de morte. A adaptação cinematográfica homônima do livro venceu o Grand Prix do festival de Cannes, em 2008. Considerado um herói nacional por Umberto Eco, recebeu o apoio de um grupo de escritores Nobel em um artigo solidário à sua condição. A máquina da lama: histórias da Itália de hoje (Companhia das Letras, 2012), é uma adaptação dos relatos transmitidos no programa de televisão que apresentou ao lado de Fabio Fabrizio. É autor de Zero Zero Zero (Companhia das Letras, 2014), reportagem sobre a cocaína e as conexões globais que funcionam em torno de seu comércio, passando por distintos níveis de organização.
