Filha de imigrantes indianos, Jhumpa Lahiri (Londres, 1967) foi criada em Rhode Island, nos Estados Unidos, e recentemente fixou-se na Itália com a família. Desde a sua festejada estreia em livro, com a coletânea Intérprete de males (2001), que lhe valeu o prêmio Pulitzer, a condição de estrangeira é uma questão central em seus romances e contos.
