Angela Carter nasceu em Sussex, na Inglaterra, em 1940, e morreu em 1992. Formou-se em literatura na Universidade de Bristol, atuou como jornalista, escreveu ensaios, poemas, críticas, scripts para rádio, contos infantis e colaborou com o cineasta Neil Jordan na criação do roteiro de A companhia dos lobos, baseado em O quarto do Barba-Azul, de sua autoria. Recebeu os seguintes prêmios: John Llewellyn Rhys em 1967, por The magic toyshop; Somerset Maugham em 1968, por Several perceptions; Cheltenham Festival of Literature em 1979, por O quarto do Barba-Azul; e James Tait Black Memorial em 1985, por Noites no circo.
