Nascido em Kingston, na Jamaica, em 1970, o escritor Marlon James, primeiro jamaicano a participar da Flip (edição 2017), define a si mesmo como um “nerd”. Filho de um advogado — leitor de Shakespeare — e uma investigadora policial, cresceu em um típico subúrbio anglo-saxão — importado para os trópicos —, foi educado em colégio inglês e sempre mais afeito à leitura do que aos esportes. No Wolmers Boys School, o garoto sofria também a discriminação por ser efeminado — e gay — num país que se libertou da Inglaterra, mas não da lei de criminalização da homossexualidade. James teve então de libertar-se de sua terra-natal. Com duzentos dólares no bolso, partiu para os EUA, onde hoje leciona literatura no Macallester College, em St Paul, Minnesota, e escreveu o livro que o faria conquistar um dos maiores prêmios literários mundiais — isso depois de ter seu primeiro romance, John Crow’s Devil (2005), recusado 48 vezes.
