Lewis Allen Reed nasceu em 1942 no Brooklyn, em Nova York. Em 1964, formou-se na Universidade de Syracuse, onde conheceu, em um curso de escrita criativa, o poeta norte-americano Delmore Schwartz, que se tornaria seu amigo e mentor. No ano seguinte, junto com o galês John Cale, que já havia trabalhado com compositores do quilate de LaMonte Young, criou o Velvet Underground, banda que incorporou de forma definitiva os elementos da música de vanguarda ao rock and roll. Além de Atravessar o fogo, Reed já publicou dois livros de fotografia.
