Bernard Lewis nasceu em Londres, em 1916. Graduou-se (1936) e doutorou-se (1939) em história pela Escola de Estudos Orientais (hoje Escola de Estudos Africanos e Orientais, SOAS – School of Oriental and African Studies), da Universidade de Londres, especializando-se nas questões relativas ao Oriente Médio, particularmente à história do Islã. Serviu na Real Armada Britânica, na Segunda Guerra, tendo integrado o grupo de Inteligência e, depois, o de Assuntos Internacionais. De volta à vida acadêmica, Lewis ocupou a recém-criada cadeira de Estudos do Oriente Próximo e Médio, na SOAS, em 1949. A partir de 1974, e até aposentar-se como professor-emérito, em 1986, Bernard Lewis passou a integrar o corpo docente da Universidade de Princeton, onde se deu o período mais produtivo de sua carreira de pesquisador e que fez dele uma figura pública, especialmente após o ataque de 2001 às Torres Gêmeas, em Nova York. Considerado por muitos o maior conhecedor da história muçulmana, ele é um dos mais respeitados historiadores vivos do mundo. Naturalizou-se americano em 1982. Além de A Descoberta da Europa pelo Islã, publicou The Emergence of Modern Turkey, The Political Language of Islam, The Jews of Islam, Islam and the West, From Babel to Dragomans: Interpreting the Middle East, entre outros.
