Jack London, pseudônimo de John Griffith Chaney, nasceu em 1876 e viveu uma juventude intensa e agitada no litoral de San Francisco. Em 1893, partiu numa viagem marítima para caçar focas que o levou até o Japão. Quatro anos depois, tomou parte da corrida do ouro no noroeste do Canadá. Em 1902 foi para Londres, onde se misturou à população pobre do East End. Também fez viagens pelo mar do Caribe e pelos mares do Sul, cobriu a Guerra Russo-Japonesa como repórter e rodou o mundo em turnês de palestras. Escritor prolífico, publicou um grande número de contos e romances, entre eles O chamado selvagem (1903), O lobo do mar (1904), O jogo (1905), Caninos Brancos (1906) e O tacão de ferro (1908). London morreu em casa, na Califórnia, em 1916.
