In the remote penal colony of Van Diemen's Land, a barefoot aboriginal girl wearing a red silk dress sits for her portrait. Richard Flanagan nasceu em Longford, Tasmânia, em 1961. Estreou como romancista em 1994, com Death of a River Guide. Publicou O livro de peixes de Gould e A terrorista desconhecida (2009), romance policial norteado pela paranoica realidade do mundo após o atentado de Onze de Setembro. Colaborou no roteiro do filme Austrália, estrelado por Nicole Kidman e Hugh Jackman. O caminho estreito para os confins do norte (2015), é um romance que ambienta-se naconstrução da ferrovia de Burma. Encomendada pelo Japão para transportar suas tropas durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, foi construída com o trabalho forçado de prisioneiros de guerra — entre eles, o pai de Flanagan, a quem dedicou o romance, premiado com o Man Booker Prize de 2014.
