Fernand Braudel nasceu em Luméville-en-Ornois, na França, em 1903. Depois de lecionar na Argélia, veio ao Brasil com o grupo de intelectuais franceses que ajudou a fundar a USP e ficou três anos no país. Aluno de Lucien Febvre, foi um dos maiores historiadores franceses de seu tempo, tendo publicado no início dos anos 40 seu estudo mais conhecido, O Mediterrâneo e o mundo mediterrânico na época de Filipe II. Morreu em 1985.
