David Foster Wallace nasceu em Ithaca, em 1962 mas logo se mudou para Illinois. Durante a adolescência foi um jogador de tênis federado, chegando a ganhar alguns torneios regionais. Formou-se com dupla graduação em Língua Inglesa (Letras) e Filosofia. É autor de romances, contos e ensaios. Seu romance Infinite jest (1996), publicado no Brasil com o título Graça infinita, é seu livro mais aclamado. A coletânea de contos Breves entrevistas com homens hediondos recebeu o Prêmio Lannan Literary 1996, categoria ficção. Ao se suicidar, em 2008, deixou um romance inacabado, The Pale King, publicado postumamente em 2011.
