Lionel Shriver nasceu Margaret Ann Shriver (1957, Carolina do Norte, Estados Unidos) e aos 15 anos mudou de nome. Formada e pós-graduada pela Universidade de Columbia e pelo Barnard College, nos Estados Unidos, viveu em Nairóbi (Quênia), Bangkok (Tailândia) e Belfast (Irlanda). Precisamos falar sobre o Kevin, seu oitavo romance, foi recusado por agentes literários e mais de 30 editoras, mas em 2005 ganhou o prêmio Orange, na Grã-Bretanha. Publicou ainda The female of the species, Checker and the Derailleurs, Ordinary decent criminals, Game control, A perfectly good family e O mundo pós-aniversário.
