Charles (Spencer) Chaplin (1889) nasceu em Londres. De família artística, estreou ainda criança no teatro. Nas décadas seguintes, nos Estados Unidos, realizou como diretor e ator alguns dos maiores filmes de todos os tempos, como O garoto (1921), Luzes da cidade (1931), Tempos modernos (1936) e Monsieur Verdoux (1947). Acusado nos EUA de simpatias comunistas, retornou com a família para a Inglaterra em 1952, mudando-se em seguida para a Suíça. Em 1964, publicou a autobiografia Minha vida. Em 1972, recebeu um Oscar honorário pelo conjunto de seus filmes. Três anos depois, foi consagrado Cavaleiro do Império Britânico pela rainha Elizabeth II. Morreu em Vevey, na Suíça, em 1977.
