Franz Kafka nasceu em Praga, na Boêmia (hoje República Tcheca), em 1883. Fez seus estudos na cidade natal, formando-se em direito em 1906. Tuberculoso, alternou temporadas em sanatórios com o trabalho burocrático. Jamais deixou de escrever, embora tenha publicado pouco e, já no fim da vida, pedido inutilmente ao amigo Max Brod que queimasse seus escritos. A maior parte de sua obra, toda escrita em alemão, foi publicada após sua morte. Quase desconhecido em vida, é considerado hoje um dos maiores escritores deste século. Autor de grandes obras como A metamorfose (1915) e O processo (1925), Kafka publicou 29 livros, entre romances, novelas e diários. Morreu em 3 de junho de 1924, em Kierling, perto de Viena.
