Frederick Forsyth nasceu na Inglaterra, em 1938. O escritor iniciou sua carreira como jornalista e obteve notoriedade a partir de seu trabalho como correspondente estrangeiro, que lhe possibilitou conhecer profundamente os meandros da política internacional. Após dois anos cobrindo a guerra civil em Biafra, na Nigéria, Forsyth decidiu escrever seu primeiro livro de ficção: O dia do Chacal, publicado em 1970.
