V. S. Naipaul nasceu em Trinidad e Tobago, em 1932. Mudou-se em 1950 para a Inglaterra, onde trabalhou como jornalista para a BBC. Doutor honoris causa pelas universidades de Cambridge, Londres, Oxford e Columbia, foi sagrado cavaleiro britânico pela rainha Elizabeth II em 1990 e recebeu o prêmio Nobel de literatura em 2001.
