Malala Yousafzai iniciou sua campanha pelo direito das meninas à educação aos dez anos. Usando o pseudônimo Gul Makai, escreveu um blog para a BBC urdu contando como era a vida sob o domínio do Talibã. Em 2011, em reconhecimento de sua coragem, Malala foi indicada ao Prêmio Internacional da Paz das Crianças e recebeu o primeiro Prêmio Nacional da Paz do Paquistão.
