Deborah Levy nasceu em Joanesburgo, África do Sul, em 1959. Seu pai, o historiador Norman Levy, um judeu de origem lituana e membro do partido social-democrata African National Congress, foi preso devido à sua atuação política antiapartheid. A autora tinha nove anos quando ele foi libertado, ainda em regime de prisão domiciliar, o que motivou a mudança da família para a Inglaterra. Estudou no extinto Dartington College of Arts até 1981, quando passou a escrever suas primeiras peças de teatro para a Royal Shakespeare Company. Em 1986, publicou Beautiful Mutants, primeiro dos seus seis romances, pelos quais recebeu diversos prêmios internacionais. Foi duas vezes finalista do Man Booker Prize, com Nadando de volta para casa e Hot Milk (2016), livros em que explora questões sobre identidade, exílio e deslocamento.
