When he hears about a man called Gotama the Buddha he leaves the Samanas. However Buddhist teaching disappoints him and he realizes that self-discovery must come from his own experiences.He rejects the spiritual life, takes a lover and becomes a rich merchant. But after some years, dissatisfied with materialism, he takes off again in search of the spiritual peace he longs for.

Hermann Hesse (1877-1962) nasceu na Alemanha, e naturalizou-se suíço em 1923. Contista, poeta, ensaísta e editor de importantes obras da literatura alemã, o escritor foi um adversário declarado do nazismo, e se posicionou firmemente contra a ascensão desta ditadura por meio de artigos publicados naquela época. Em 1911, viajou para a Índia a fim de conhecer a vida no Extremo Oriente. Em seus textos, Hesse procurou se manter fiel às tradições literárias românticas e clássicas. É autor, entre outros livros, de O jogo das contas de vidro, O lobo da estepe, Sonho de uma flauta e Narciso e Goldmund. Em 1946, Hermann Hesse ganhou o Prêmio Nobel de Literatura.
