Thomas Mann (1875-1955) foi um dos grandes escritores alemães, autor de contos e ensaios políticos e obras-primas como Os Buddenbrooks, A montanha mágica, Morte em Veneza e Doutor Fausto. Premiado com o Nobel de literatura em 1929, manifestou-se constantemente sobre as questões de seu tempo. Era filho de um comerciante alemão e de uma brasileira. Ele se exilou na Suiça, com a subida de Hitler, e depois foi para Estados Unidos por uns anos.
