Albert Camus nasceu em 1913, em Mondovi, na Argélia, hoje conhecida como Dréan, então colônia francesa. Formou-se em filosofia na Universidade da Argélia, em 1935 e fundou o “Teatro do Trabalho”. Foi membro do Partido Comunista Francês e escreveu em jornais socialistas. Em 1939 mudou-se para a França. Lá casou-se com Francine Faure e colaborou para a publicação Paris-Soir. Em 1942 publicou dois de seus livros mais importantes, O Estrangeiro e O Mito de Sísifo. Segundo muitos críticos, a ideia do absurdo da existência humana, formulada nestas obras, foi a maior contribuição de Camus para a filosofia. Engajou-se na Segunda Guerra Mundial como editor do jornal clandestino Combat. Em 1947 publicou A Peste, romance traduzido para o português pelo escritor Graciliano Ramos. Entre 1949 e 1951, Camus viveu recluso, enfraquecido por causa da tuberculose, doença que contraíra em 1930. Publicou ainda O Homem Revoltado (1951), obra que provocou sua ruptura com Sartre. Um dos escritores mais lidos do século XX, Albert Camus recebeu o Prêmio Nobel de Literatura em 1957. Morreu em 1960, vítima de um acidente de carro.
