Patti Smith nasceu em 1946 em Chicago, Estados Unidos. Antes de completar 21 anos, mudou-se para Nova York, onde conheceu Robert Mapplethorpe, seu companheiro e amigo de muitos anos. Patti ganhou reconhecimento nos anos 1970 por sua fusão revolucionária de poesia com rock, e seu disco Horses, tido como precursor do punk, é considerado um dos cem melhores álbuns de todos os tempos. Ela gravou uma série de discos e publicou livros de poesia como Babel e Auguries of Innocence. Em 1973, Patti expôs seus primeiros desenhos. Em 2008, a Fundação Cartier de Paris fez uma grande mostra com fotografias, instalações e desenhos da artista.
