Hisham Matar nasceu na cidade de Nova Iorque, em 1970. Filho de pais líbios, passou a infância em Trípoli e no Cairo, e viveu a maior parte da sua vida em Londres. É autor dos romances No país dos homens (Companhia das Letras, 2007), finalista do Booker Prize, e Anatomia de um desaparecimento (Record, 2012), e das memórias O retorno (Âyiné, 2022), vencedor do Prêmio Pulitzer em 2017. Seu romance mais recente, Meus amigos (Âyiné, 2026), foi indicado ao Booker Prize e finalista do National Book Award. Ganhou o Prêmio Orwell de Ficção Política, o Prix du meilleur livre étranger e o National Book Critics Circle Award. Sua obra foi traduzida para mais de trinta idiomas.
