Witold Gombrowicz nasceu em 1904 numa propriedade rural perto de Varsóvia. Formou-se em direito pela Universidade de Varsóvia e completou os estudos em Paris, graduando-se em filosofia e economia. Iniciou a carreira literária em 1933, com a publicação da coletânea de contos surrealistas Memórias dos tempos da imaturidade. Em 1939, partiu para Buenos Aires, mas não conseguiu voltar a sua terra natal, invadida durante a Segunda Guerra. Passou 24 anos na Argentina e, em 1963, recebeu uma bolsa da Fundação Ford para viver um ano em Berlim. Após o término da bolsa, mudou-se para o sul da França, e permaneceu lá até a morte, em 1969.
