Multifacetado, William Boyd (1952, Acra, Gana) já foi crítico de televisão, professor de literatura inglesa na Universidade de Oxford e escreveu diversos roteiros de cinema, entre eles o do filme A trincheira, de 1999, do qual também foi diretor. Foram seus livros, entretanto, que lhe renderam reconhecimento. Seu primeiro romance, A good man in Africa (1981), lhe garantiu dois prêmios, o Whitbread e o Somerset Maugham. Em 1983, Boyd tornou-se membro da Royal Society of Literature. Ao todo, o escritor já publicou dez romances, três coletâneas de contos e uma coletânea de textos de não-ficção. Seu mais recente romance, Ordinary thunderstorms, publicado no final de 2009, narra a experiência de um jovem que, sem explicação, perde tudo o que outrora definia sua identidade.
